about

In 2020, David Rehorick invited Roland Bourgeois to contribute a flugelhorn part to “Just One Moment”, the signature tune on David’s second album JUST ONE MOMENT. Reconnecting with Roland has led to a collaborative recording project that includes Miles Black, Roland Bourgeois, and David Rehorick. It’s an east-west coast venture with Miles and David in Vancouver, and Roland in Dieppe, New Brunswick.

This digital album features Roland Bourgeois playing flugelhorn on each tune, plus muted trumpet on a few. This is an acknowledgement of the courage and fortitude Roland has shown in finding alternative ways to overcome technical constraints on performance stemming from medical issues.

Miles Black recorded and sound engineered tracks on an array of our original compositions, playing a variety of instruments including piano, guitar, flute, bass, and saxophones.

Biographical Notes

Roland A. Bourgeois

After spending eight years in Toronto where he honed his art in the company of musicians such as Claude Ranger and Fred Stone, trumpeter Roland Bourgeois returned to his native New Brunswick to pursue a career as a jazz musician and music teacher. Since retiring in 2013, he has released an album of original compositions with his Montreal quartet (2015), and an album of standards with Moncton guitarist Jamie Colpitts (2017).

In 2018, he returned to the studio to work on an album of original compositions (still unreleased). At this time, he first felt the effects of his right hand not being able to play trumpet up to speed. Since January 2020, Roland has played flugelhorn with his left hand as he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Roland has been file sharing and working on an online album with multi-instrumentalist Miles Black and producer David Rehorick both living in Vancouver BC.

Miles Black

Vancouver BC based composer, songwriter, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Miles Black has over 40 years of professional experience. He has recorded on over 800 albums, and has performed world-wide with many music greats, including Sweets Edison, George Coleman, Max Roach, Dee Daniels, Houston Person, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan and Lew Tabackin to name a few.

Miles is currently co-leading the award winning and Juno-nominated modern jazz quartet Altered Laws with reed-man Tom Keenlyside. He is a member of the Oliver Gannon Quartet, The Mike Allen Quartet, and leads the Miles Black Octet. Miles is also pianist with Triology, the highly acclaimed and sought-after jazz trio (www.mileslback.com).

Miles also is a noted jazz educator and clinician at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s School of Music (www.vsoschoolofmusic.ca).

David Rehorick

The story of David’s interest in jazz is intertwined with his fifty years as a university educator and research scholar. He is an award-winning professor who has taught in Canada, Japan, and the United States. David holds the distinction of Professor Emeritus at the University of New Brunswick and the Fielding Graduate University. He was thirty years old before he saw a first jazz fake sheet, a turn that led to semi-professional jazz performance experience with trios to quintets.

After moving to Vancouver, David returned to jazz piano study with Victor Noriega and Miles Black. He began to focus on composition in 2016, leading to the release of his first album STEP UP (2018), followed by JUST ONE MOMENT (2020). His albums embrace musical expression that includes instrumental, vocal, and spoken word jazz tunes. Find out more about his music and scholarship at www.davidrehorick.com

This collection of eleven tunes arose through casual ZOOM meetings among Roland, Miles, and David. It became our way to continue our collaboration. We have enjoyed our east-west coast chats about music and life over the past 16 months. And we hope you will enjoy our tunes.
